Good Prospects for 2002

The year 2001 is now well and truly over. This last year saw Finchdean badly effected by two setbacks. Spring 2001 started with the continuing Lavant floods which brought misery and inconvenience to many in the village and in the areas nearby. The second setback was the foot and mouth epidemic. While Hampshire and the south of England in general had hardly any cases of this disease (for which the farmers in this area must be very thankful), it nevertheless had a significant effect on village life. The first obvious effect was the cancellation of the annual Hocktide Fair in May which was sadly missed as an opportunity for the village to get together. The second effect was to significantly reduce the number of walkers in the area and restricted us from going up to the top of our nearby down, Idsworth (or Church) Down. We all felt quite stuffy by the time the restrictions were finally lifted! The reduction in visitors was not good news for the village pub (The George) and also may have indirectly contributed to the closure of our nearest tea shop in Rowlands Castle, The Coffee Pot.

So we start 2002 without floods and foot and mouth, and there is some prospect that measures will be taken to minimise the effect of any future floods, which must be A Good Thing. We hope that the Hocktide Fair will go ahead this year and look forward to a nice summer in this corner of Hampshire.
